Campground Review – Mount Desert Campground, Acadia Park Maine

Mount Desert Campground is located just outside of Acadia National Park in Maine.  This is an ideal campground for visiting the beauty of this national park and the Bar Harbor area.

Mount Desert Campground has older, but nice and clean facilities.  It is beautifully located right on the harbor with kayak rentals available.  They have a nice store, and grassy sites.  They have a pool and plenty of activities for the children.

Campground Review – KOA – Saco/Old Orchard Beach Maine

The KOA in Saco/Old Orchard Beach is probably the friendliest campground I have ever visited.  The staff was extremely helpful and went out of their way to welcome us, take us to our site, help us set up if needed and tell us what to see and what the coming events were in the next couple of days.  I know many campgrounds do these things, but it just seemed that the ‘yellow shirts’ were going out of their way to help us.

The campground is not large, but they offer so much.  The playground area was a big hit with the kids and the store with its large front porch and checkers set up for use was very relaxing.  The campground was very tidy and neat with no areas overlooked.  The restrooms were clean and well cared for.

The first thing that comes to mind when I think of this campground is that on Saturday morning the staff made pancakes and serve breakfast for a very minimal charge.  It was great!

It’s no wonder that this campground was a KOA President’s Award winner in 2012!

Campground Review – Codorus State Park, Hanover Pennsylvania

The Codorus State Park in South Central Pennsylvania is a 3400 acre state park that surrounds Lake Marburg which covers 1275 acres and has 26 miles of shoreline.  The camping at Codorus consists of 190 sites with about an equal amount split between wooded and open field sites.  Like most state parks in PA, most of the sites have electric, but none have water.  There is water available throughout the campground for filling your RV tanks or other portable containers.

The sites are large and they are easy to back into with a travel trailer.  The lake offers great boating, kayaking, and fishing.  The park offers rentals.  The park also has a swimming pool which is open to the public and is often quite busy. There are numerous hiking trails and the park rangers offer great “teaching”, fun activities for the children.

Campground Review – Lickdale Campground, Jonestown Pennsylvania

The Lickdale Campground is just off of Interstate 81 on Route 72 just North of the Harrisburg/Hershey area.  This is a small but comfortable campground right along the Swatara Creek which offers great kayaking and tubing options.

Lickdale Campground has nice wooded sites, a great camp store, and nice facilities.  The camp store is also home to an ice cream shop, both of which are popular with the locals.

There is a good bit of traffic noise, especially at the sites along Route 72.  The campground is only a couple hundred yards off of the Interstate and is set at a traffic light, so traffic is heavy and, from personal experience, it seems that on Friday nights the local teenagers like to race away from the light.  I would ask for a site set further back into the campground and not near the front.

Campground Review – Double G RV Park, Deep Creek Lake, Maryland

We spent 3 nights at the Double G RV Park a couple of years ago.  The Deep Creek Lake region of Maryland is one of our favorite places to visit.  The beauty of the area combined with some of the entertainment provided is a good balance.

Double G is a small campground within close proximity to the Lake itself.  The staff/owners were very friendly and accommodating.  The sites were a little small, but well cared for.  There were not a lot of amenities at the campground, but at a place like Deep Creek we spent very little time at the campground and most of it sight seeing and kayaking.

When we visited, the owners had a dog that was a great addition and very friendly.  He came to hang out with us for hours on end.  He would sleep next to our campfire and walk around to see what we were eating.  He behaved himself very well and was no problem at all, but was probably one of the things we liked best about our experience there.

Campground Review – KOA Woodstock, NH (White Mountains Region)

We visited the KOA in Woodstock, NH two years ago.  It was our first time ever in New Hampshire and we thoroughly enjoyed the White Mountains region and the Woodstock area.  We only stayed at this campground for three nights before moving on to another leg of our long trip, but at the end of the vacation, we wished we had stayed here for the entire time.

This KOA has a beautiful location along a picturesque river (you have to hike down to it; about a 15 minute walk).  It is close to the highway and the town, but you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.  The facility is clean, neat, and has everything to offer.  They excel at having dog sitting with very nice accommodations for your pets.

The pool is small but clean, the store is nice, the restrooms are well taken care of and in good shape, the laundry facility was very nice and they had plenty of activities for the kids.

Association – KOA ‘Kampgrounds of America’

KOA is the most recognized campground franchise in the United States.  The bright yellow signs and employee shirts are a trademark that many camper look for while traveling.

KOA requires a standard of excellence from the campgrounds that bear their name.  A KOA campground should have clean and upgraded restroom facilities, many activities and a full range of amenities.  KOA has a wide range of programs for campers that frequent their facilities. Their KOA Rewards program (a membership that costs $24 per year) allows campers to earn points and save money by frequenting their campgrounds.  This membership is more than worth while if you plan at least 3 trips per year to a KOA.
